The project challenges conventional furniture typologies and questions the reliance on rigid industrial materials such as wood, metal, and plastic. By using hardened leather as both form and support, the chairs demonstrate the material’s overlooked strength, versatility, and expressive potential. The collection invites a reconsideration of how materials are categorised and used in design, revealing how traditional assumptions can limit innovation. Central to the project is an adapted leather-hardening technique historically used in armour making. Sheets of leather are first carefully wet-moulded over custom forms to achieve precise contours and sculptural shapes. Once formed, the leather is submerged in a heated stearic acid solution, which penetrates the fibres and significantly increases rigidity and durability. After drying, the material retains its shape and becomes capable to withstand weight without the need for an internal frame. Through this process, leather transforms from a flexible, familiar material into a solid, architectural element. The chairs highlight both the natural texture of leather and the precision of the moulding method, balancing aesthetic refinement with structural performance. Gorse is a wild yellow edible flower native to UK, it has many recipies for making drinks, bakeries and desserts. It is commonly foraged in rural areas but not in the city. This design eases the process of making gorse flower syrup by setting out the orders and proportions of each ingredients. It demonstrates this source of wild food and encourages people to forage in the city. However, lack of nature connnectedness has became one of the core cause of climate crisis. It is a common phenomenon in developed cities especially, that human tends to be distanced from nature, not only causing health issues for us but also reduces people's awareness of nature. Natural waste resources such as leaves and seed shells are often overlooked by people, as their existence does not have any impact on nature lives as well as human lives. So why not take advantage of these wastes and give them a purpose in our lives? Through furniture making, these wastes can encourage people to sense, celebrate natural resources, interact with nature through foraging and collecting things in nature. Beechmast is the seed shell of beech tree. It is a waste from nature and a free material source. In this way, the process of taking daily measurements becomes quick and efficient. The issue might be that the measurements are not fully accurate; therefore, we created a much more intuitional and fun way of displaying the approximate readings. The Approximetre is able to measure approximate distance up 6 metres; it can also be used as a level to check if a surface is flat. We used arduino codes to fulfil the main functions including measuring and displaying. The given brief is to design a small collection of desk and stationery items for the new home-based working era. My inspiration is from Chinese ink paintings and Chinese calligraphy. I wanted to create a modern version of the traditional “Four Treasures of the Study” (brushes, ink sticks, paper and ink stones) from ancient China. The series of items consist of a pen holder, a table lamp and a glass or phone holder, each matching an element from typical Chinese ink paintings.
